JNCC brings together Caribbean and South Atlantic Overseas Territories in Territory to Territory partnership

Building partnerships between the UK Overseas Territories

JNCC is supporting a Territory to Territory (‘T2T’) partnership between the Governments of two UK Overseas Territories, Montserrat and the Falkland Islands, to transfer knowledge and skills from the South Atlantic to the Caribbean.

The partnership, being facilitated by JNCC, will focus on information management and marine spatial planning. The benefits of this joint-working will include the enhancement of Montserrat’s capacity to manage the large amounts of environmental, agricultural, socio-economic and other data already available both now and in the future. The project will also initiate a Marine Spatial Planning process for the island.

Hon. Claude Hogan, Montserrat’s Minister for Land, Agriculture, Trade, Housing and Environment said: “This agreement represents a major break-through by our Government to manage and co-ordinate developments in our marine environment.”

The Hon MLA Mr Michael Poole, Falkland Islands Government, said: “Sharing expertise and experience between territories has been something that the Falkland Islands Government has always worked proactively on. We are very pleased that our strong partnerships with other Overseas Territories and JNCC have led to this Territory to Territory sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise with our colleagues in Montserrat.”

Dr Paul Brickle, Director of the Falklands based South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI), said: “We are very excited to be delivering this work for Montserrat on behalf of the Falkland Islands Government. SAERI has developed a Marine Spatial Planning model and complementary data management model that have seen us develop these processes and systems for small islands with finite resources.”
