The Master List contains information on the
conservation listings of different taxa. Please see Master
List column descriptions for an explanation of what information
is provided under each column in this sheet.
The Master List provides a flexible format,
suitable for filtering data on a range of parameters.
For example users can focus on
- An individual species, e.g. Otter Lutra
lutra.
- A taxonomic group, e.g. Lichen.
- A specific list, e.g. all UK BAP priority
species.
- A type of legislation, e.g. species listed under the
Habitats Directive.
- A type of designation, e.g. Critically
Endangered.
This is done by clicking on the grey down
arrow on the right hand side of the relevant column heading (row 1
on the master list), and then selecting the appropriate item on the
list. When a filter has been made on a range of data, the row
numbers on the left hand side of the spreadsheet are shown in blue,
as is the drop down arrow in the column heading used for filter.
(Note, if using MS Office 2007 you will need to click on check
boxes from the drop down menu in order to filter, and filter
symbol will appear in the place of the down arrow when the filter
is on.)
Filters can be used in combination,
e.g. to list all invertebrate species under the UK BAP,
first select ‘Invertebrate’ using the ‘category’ filter, followed
by "Biodiversity Action plan lists" from the ‘reporting category’
filter.
Hint: If you then want to
focus on something different, for example all ferns under the UK
BAP, don’t forget to undo the filter on ‘category’ since there will
be no ‘ferns’ found under the ‘invertebrate’ category! To undo the
filer, click on the blue down arrow and select ‘all’ from the drop
down menu. If you can’t find what you are looking for, it is a good
idea to scroll across and check there are no filters
on that you don’t know about.
For more specialised searches you can use
"custom filter", also obtainable from clicking on the drop down
arrow in the column heading. Choose the ‘custom’ option at the top
of the list of items. The custom filter enables you to search
for items starting with or containing a search term. For example,
if you want to search for all entries in the ‘tern’ genus –
‘Sterna’, then choose ‘custom’ filter, select ‘begins with’, and
type ‘Sterna ’ into the text box.
