Training and Research Programme Steering Group
The Falkland Islands is a member of the Training and Research Programme Steering
Group which drives the direction of the OT Training and
Research Programme.
Research Priorities 2011
JNCC asks the OTs and CDs for information about their top 3
research priorities each year via members of the OT and CD Training and Research Programme
Steering Group. These priorities are used to inform a number of
funding decisions including the JNCC
Research Contributions.
Training
JNCC is able to support the OTs and CDs with funding to
attend environmental training courses.
Herbarium Management
Helen Marsh, of the Environmental Planning Department, attended
a three week individual training course, on Herbarium Management,
at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. The programme was designed
specifically to meet her needs as volunteer curator of the Falkland
Islands National Herbarium, and ran from 22nd July to 9th August
2013.

Invasive species project
In 2010, for the International Year of Biodiversity, the UK
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has
funded a series of invasive species projects across the UK Overseas
Territories. This has been coordinated by the Joint Nature
Conservation Committee. Project activities on Falkland
Islands will be:
- Surveys of priority islands in the Passage/Weddell area and the
Falklands Sound for the presence of rodents and other invasive
alien species, and an investigation of the eradication potential of
islands found to be rodent-infested.
- Eradication of Norway Rats from four islands in Port
Salvador.
- Surveys of selected marine sites to determine the presence and
extent of invasive alien marine species.
- Control of invasive plant species
- Development of a strategy to manage Creeping and Spear Thistle
in the islands.
