JNCC’s advice on offshore Marine
Conservation Zones proposed for designation in 2013
JNCC's advice on offshore Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs)
proposed for designation in 2013 report is available to download
below.
Our scientific advice details our assessments in the confidence
of feature presence and feature extent; feature vulnerability;
feature risk; feature condition and on whether the data for a
feature/site support its designation. The MCZ advice protocols were
used in the production of this advice and are available to view on
our website. View the MCZ Project Advice Protocols.
Tranche One Post-Consultation Advice (August 2013)
We provided post consultation advice (available below) on the
six JNCC-led offshore sites proposed for designation in 2013.
Natural England also provided advice on inshore and cross boundary
MCZs (sites straddling the 12 nautical mile limit, such as South
Dorset MCZ) proposed for designation in 2013. This advice can be
found on their website.
Site Information Centres (SICs) have been
developed for the offshore and cross boundary MCZs designated in
Tranche One. SICs contain the most up to date information on
offshore MPAs, and include detailed sections on current activities
taking place and their management. Conservation objectives,
conservation advice, and information on evidence that supports the
presence of the protected features in the sites are also
included.
JNCC and Natural England scientific advice on the MCZ Regional
Project recommendations (July 2012)
Potential sites for Marine Conservation Zones were identified
through regional project groups as part of the Government’s
Marine Conservation Zone Project.
Following the submission of recommendations, JNCC provided
formal advice to Government in
partnership with Natural England on the proposed sites.
Between December 2012 and March 2013, Defra held a
public consultation on all recommended MCZs and indicated which
sites they felt had a case for designation in 2013. Of the 31 sites
Defra identified for designation in 2013, five are located in the
offshore area (beyond 12 nautical miles) and fall under our remit
for advice and reporting.
