Report 463b
Implementation of and consideration for revisions to the JNCC guidelines for seismic surveys
Stone, C.J.
Data from 1,121 seismic surveys within the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) between 1995 and 2010 were examined to assess compliance with the JNCC Guidelines for Minimising the Risk of Injury and Disturbance to Marine Mammals from Seismic Surveys (JNCC 2010 and earlier versions).

This report presents the results of an analysis of Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) data from seismic survey consents from 1995 to 2010 in UK waters.  The aim of the analysis was to assess the level of compliance with the JNCC seismic guidelines and in so doing suggest recommendations for best practice for consideration in any future revision to the guidelines.

JNCC Report 463b highlights items for consideration for when the JNCC seismic guidelines are next revised, based on the analysis presented in the report.  However, these suggestions do not represent JNCC’s position on recommended revisions and do not constitute any changes to the current guidelines at present.   The suggestions in the report may form the basis of further discussion and wider consultation during any future review process of the guidelines.  Further to this, any potential revisions to the JNCC seismic guidelines would be informed by wider public consultation and this report is not prompting this public consultation at the present time.
